Acrylic Showers Maintenance Guide: What to Use (and Avoid)

Acrylic showers are a popular choice in Kiwi homes thanks to their durability, affordability, and sleek finish—but like anything in your bathroom, they need the right care to stay looking sharp. Whether you’re a new homeowner or giving your bathroom a refresh, here’s your no-fuss guide to keeping your acrylic shower in top shape.

What to Use

  1. Mild Detergent or Soap
Stick to gentle liquid cleaners or dish soap diluted in warm water. A soft cloth or sponge is all you need for regular weekly cleaning.
  2. White Vinegar (Diluted)
Perfect for tackling soap scum and water spots—just mix with water and spray it on, then rinse off with clean water.
  3. Microfibre Cloths
These are your best friend! They clean without scratching and are perfect for drying your shower after use to prevent build-up.
  4. Baking Soda Paste (for Tough Spots)
Make a gentle paste with water and baking soda to remove stubborn grime. Just be sure to rinse thoroughly.

What to Avoid

  1. Abrasive Cleaners or Scrubbers
Steel wool, harsh scouring pads, or powder-based cleaners can scratch and dull the acrylic surface over time.
  2. Ammonia or Acetone-based Products
These can cause the surface to become cloudy or brittle. Always check labels before using a new product.
  3. High-Pressure Water Blasters
They might seem like a time-saver, but they can actually damage seals or surfaces if not used carefully.
  4. Leaving Shampoo Bottles on Ledges Long-Term
The dyes and chemicals can leave marks—use a shower caddy instead!

Bonus Tip: Keep it Dry

Wiping down your shower after each use is the best way to prevent mould, soap scum, and water marks—especially in New Zealand’s damper months. You can do this by purchasing our Newline Squeegee.
