When it comes to designing a bathroom, every detail matters, and the choice of shower glass can significantly impact the overall aesthetics and functionality of your bathroom.  In this blog, we’ll delve into five different types of shower glass: Standard, Fluted, UltraClear, Grey Glass to help you make an informed decision for your next project.

1. Standard Glass

Benefits of Standard Glass

This is the most commonly used type of glass and provides an unobstructed view of the shower interior, making it an excellent choice for showcasing intricate tilework and design features within the shower.

  1. Affordability: Standard clear glass is budget-friendly, making it a practical choice for many homeowners.
  2. Versatility: It complements a wide range of bathroom styles and can be customized with different hardware and finishes.
  3. Maintenance: While it may require more cleaning to keep it spotless, it’s relatively easy to maintain.

Things to Consider Before Choosing a Standard Glass

  1. Privacy: Standard Clear Glass offers no privacy.
  2. Appearance: If you’re looking for something unique or more stylish, standard glass might not be the best choice.

2. Fluted Glass

Fluted glass, also known as textured or reeded glass, is a unique choice for shower enclosures. It features vertical or horizontal ridges that add a touch of elegance and privacy to your bathroom. Here are some key benefits and considerations:

Benefits of Fluted Glass

  1. Privacy: Fluted glass obscures the view, providing a level of privacy while still allowing light to filter through.
  2. Style: The textured surface creates a sophisticated and vintage aesthetic, making it perfect for both modern and classic bathroom designs.
  3. Maintenance: The ridges can help hide water spots and soap scum, making it easier to maintain compared to clear glass.

Things to Consider Before Choosing a Fluted Glass

  1. Cleaning: The textured surface can trap dirt and require more effort to clean thoroughly.
  2. Light: While it allows light to pass through, the texture may diffuse it slightly, potentially making your shower area slightly dimmer than clear glass.

3. Ultraclear Glass or Low Iron Glass

Ultraclear glass, often referred to as low-iron or starphire glass, is a premium choice for those who want an unobstructed view and maximum light transmission. See below for comparison Standard vs UltraClear Glass:

Benefits of Ultraclear Glass

Ultraclear glass, often referred to as low-iron or starphire glass, is a premium choice for those who want an unobstructed view and maximum light transmission. Here are the pros and cons:

Clarity

  1. Clarity: UltraClear glass is virtually colourless and has reduced iron content, resulting in exceptional clarity and transparency.
  2. Aesthetics: It creates a sleek and modern appearance, making your bathroom feel more spacious and open.
  3. Cleaning: Its smooth surface is easy to clean and less prone to water spots and soap scum.

Things to Consider Before Choosing a Ultraclear Glass

  1. Cost: Ultraclear glass is typically more expensive than standard clear glass.
  2. Privacy: Ultraclear glass is typically more expensive than standard clear glass.

4. Grey Glass

Grey glass, also known as smoked glass or tinted glass, adds a touch of sophistication and privacy to your shower enclosure. Here are its advantages and considerations:

Benefits of Grey Glass

  1. Privacy: Grey glass provides enhanced privacy while still allowing some light to filter through, creating a cozy ambiance.
  2. Style: It adds a contemporary and elegant look to your bathroom, making it a popular choice for modern designs.
  3. Sunlight Control: the tinted glass can help reduce glare and control the amount of natural light in the shower.

Things to Consider Before Choosing a Grey Glass

1. Darker Appearance: The tinted glass might make your bathroom feel slightly smaller or darker, depending on the amount of natural light available.

Conclusion

The choice of shower glass is a crucial decision when designing your bathroom. Each type of glass, whether it’s fluted, Ultra Clear, standard, or grey, offers a unique blend of privacy, style, and functionality. Consider your budget, design preferences, and maintenance requirements when making your selection.  Ultimately, the perfect shower glass will not only elevate the aesthetics of your bathroom but also enhance your overall showering experience.

Is frosted glass more expensive and by what margin compared to clear glass?
There doesn’t seem to be much available in opaque shower walls?

    1. Hello Anna,
      Thanks for your message.
The reason frosted or opaque glass is more expensive than clear glass is because it takes additional steps to achieve that look. In doing so, the manufacturer will usually employ techniques like sandblasting or acid etching.
We don’t sell frosted glass here so we wouldn’t be able to tell you the cost difference I am afraid. Thanks for your message.
